Ace talking to Mel
Can I continue with my writing-about-Doctor-Who streak? I watched "Dragonfire" last night, so let's see.

words )

(On an unrelated note, is anyone else having problems with Google Docs? I had to recode [livejournal.com profile] soniclipstick from scratch yesterday evening because the document with everything I'd done earlier had disappeared. Annoyingly said document reappeared this morning. Too late, Google Docs, too late!)

...in bulletpoints! BULLETPOINTS OF LOVE. (NB I did not get much sleep last night, since all the dust I stirred up in my clearing out binge yesterday settled in my lungs and impeded my ability to breathe, so I don't know how much sense this is all going to make.)

anyway, spoilers! )

I really want to get back into the swing of a) watching and b) posting about Classic Who. To that end, here are some words about "Paradise Towers"!

spoilers )

I never know how to round off these posts. Those are all the words I have at the moment. Here endeth this post.
Ace talking to Mel
Had an exam yesterday, it was rubbish. Well, it was alright. No, it was rubbish. Either way, it's over now and I can relax a bit, apart from the fact that lectures start again on Wednesday and I have stuff to read for them, and the going to work every day thing, and also my flat's a tip because I've been ignoring things that aren't revision... ANYWAY, I do have a bit more time now to do important things like watch TV. And last night I had time to finish looking at all the fantastic things in my [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking! ♥ ♥ ♥ I didn't manage to make/write as much stuff as I wanted to for other people, sadly: combination of revision and terrible time management, sorry! I did make some podfics, though, which was a lot of fun (apart from the probably-inevitable moment of "is that really what my voice sounds like? ...oh dear."). Here they are:

Or, in which I steal an idea from [livejournal.com profile] nwhyte: which of these books, which I have read this year, have you also read?

(apologies to LJ-only people; I was going to post this poll in both places, but I don't think I can face doing all that cutting and pasting all over again. /o\)
Martha and Liz from Doctor Who, with the TARDIS and a Christmas tree in the background
- Am having a "too much internet, too little time" type problem. I hereby apologise for anything I have failed to reply to in the past or will fail to reply to in the future. D: Please let me know about things I should've replied to but haven't!

- LJ's new comment page, aside from everything else, appears to have messed up my layout a little. *sigh* And syndicated feeds don't seem to be updating either.

- At home for Christmas, thus I have played many games ("I've just remembered why I live on another continent", commented The Sister, halfway through Trivial Pursuits) and eaten a great deal of food. Also, earlier this evening I overheard my mother remarking that she wanted to use the top oven to heat the plates as the bottom oven "uses ALL the gas". I AM SO PROUD.

- The Sister and I went to see the new Sherlock Holmes film! I may get round to posting about it eventually, but basically very general impressions, not spoilers ) In related news, I went to a pub quiz and gained a point for my team by correctly identifying a picture of Jude Law in drag. Hurray!

- It is the MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR. By which I mean it is [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking time! My stocking is here; let me know where yours are! ♥

- Haven't been posting very much recently; this is because I have an assignment due in next Wednesday and my response to stress is basically "hide in a corner; bite anyone who tries to talk to me". Which is not ideal, especially as I have to go to work every day, an arena where biting is generally discouraged.

- My local library was closed for TWO WHOLE WEEKS. It was terrible. But now it is open again and they had books for me! As a result I finished 52: Volume 3 last night, which I liked more than the previous volumes because it had a) lots more Batfamily-action and b) Christmas. Also it almost made me cry a couple of times.

- Also on a comics note, I have been watching Justice League (on [livejournal.com profile] everlasting_day's recommendation), which I love a lot. It made me like Batman by the simple expedient of having him be hilariously grumpy and sarcastic basically all the time, and it has Wonder Woman who I already loved (I just watched an episode which was all about her getting a girlfriend. Possibly that is not what it was supposed to be about. Nevermind. IT WAS GREAT), yay. And I adore The Flash, and am growing v. fond of Hawkgirl, especially in her scenes with Green Lantern. And J'onn J'onzz is voiced by Carl Lumbly! DIXON! ♥

- Have I linked to DC girls in sweaters yet? I don't think I have, which is clearly an error on my part. The Batwoman one has just gone up and it is SO PRETTY.

- Apparently if you hit return after typing a tag you can end up accidentally posting an entry before you meant to. This is a thing that I did not know until about ten minutes ago. Whoops!

Hmm, I was not overly delighted with the finale. I'm not quite at the "I diskard it uterly" stage yet, but many of the things it is currently choosing to be do not please me.

(Disclaimer: I was not entirely paying attention during this episode, since I was busy reading 52 volume 2 in the ad breaks and during any scenes I disapproved of. I'm finding 52 a bit of an uphill struggle, since I don't really know the backstory or what's going on or who about 90% of the characters are, but every now and then Renee Montoya gets a few pages, so I persevere. Anyway. Back to Downton Abbey.)

spoilers! )

I have been working my way through various female led action/superhero films! Here are some of the things that I have watched:

- Resident Evil: bizarrely, this was the second film in as many days to contain Unexpected James Purefoy (the other was Bedrooms and Hallways), well done there, film. I enjoyed it a lot, although it is rather gorier than my usual fare: it turns out I am fine with zombies but very freaked out by possibly getting into spoiler territory? )

- Next up was Elektra, which is not a good film, but overall I feel very positive about it as it contained one element that I really loved: spoilers )

- Also I watched Aeon Flux, which was... odd. not really spoilers but I have got into the habit of using cut tags now, so )

- After that was Supergirl; I've been trying to get into the Supergirl comics recently (because of how she and Batgirl fought vampires that time), but they are SO CONFUSING, so I was a little dismayed to see a whole other backstory for her that wasn't the one I knew. But that issue aside, I liked it a lot - not necessarily a good film, but an entertaining one. Overall I would characterise it as "deeply cheesy, but nevertheless rather charming". I am thinking particularly of the scene where vaguely spoilery, maybe )

- And finally, Milla Jovovich again in Ultraviolet! I was expecting to enjoy it based on the fact that she had a sword on the DVD cover, but I was rather put off by the fact that everyone looked oddly smooth and glowy for some reason. Step away from the effects box, people! I was also unimpressed by the almost complete lack of female characters who weren't Violet, grrr. On the plus side, it did pick up a fair bit when the swords eventually came out, and I enjoyed the final fight scene a lot: spoilers! )

I feel like I should have some concluding thoughts here, but I don't. Well, nothing beyond "make more superheroine films! And make them better!", but I had that one before I started. Actually, thinking about it, I would like superheroine TV serieses even better, since I prefer TV to film as a medium. GET ON THAT, PEOPLE WHO ARE IN CHARGE OF THESE THINGS.

(I typed most of this out in Google Docs, which has helpfully corrected a selection of my straight quotes to curly quotes. Why do you hate me at the moment, Google?)

I use Google Reader a lot. A LOT. And I really liked it, until I loaded it this morning and saw the new interface, which squishes all the actual content down into one corner and spaces out the headlines so that they’re a right pain to scroll through. Argh. So now I am in the market for recommendations: I just want a browser based feed reader that has a fairly sparse interface and allows me to sort feeds into folders and display them with the oldest items first, but I am beginning to feel like I am asking for the moon on a stick. I’ve been looking at various alternatives all morning, but they all do things I don’t like, e.g. insisting on showing me what’s popular (I get enough of that from facebook) or only display new items since my last visit (!). All suggestions gratefully received; I am tearing my hair out here, and feel like I am probably going to end up sticking with Google Reader as the least worst option. D:

(In other things-that-are-annoying-me news, it would be a bad idea to trim a few inches off my own hair with scissors, right? Right.)

I made a flying visit to London this weekend to be one of the eleven girl!Doctors for Halloween. IT WAS AWESOME. Here are some pictures! I was Eight, and I may have spent some time last week making myself a sonic screwdriver. :D?

- Just realised that I will be on a train next week when the final episode of Spooks is being broadcast. DISASTER. So most of next Monday will be spent dodging spoilers. Am slightly terrified of what might happen: "rocks fall, everybody dies" is a distinct possibility, I feel. Anyway, I will probably cry as I have been watching this ridiculous program for over a third of my life now. Re. last night's episode: spoilers )

- People of the internet! Can anyone recommend me any superhero films with female leads? I was reading SFX's top 50 superhero films poll results the other day and it contained only one female led film (Supergirl, at number 37), which made me sad. But then I tried to think of things that should've been in there and couldn't, which made me even sadder. (NB I haven't seen Electra or Catwoman, so can't judge if their exclusion was a) unjust or b) reasonable.) Surely there are some out there?

- There ought to be a third thing, but I can't think of one.

I have changed ALL MY OPINIONS about Downton Abbey. (Disclaimer: this may be an exaggeration. Verging on a lie.)

spoilers! Mostly about shipping. )

In other news, term has just started and I am at that stage where I feel like I should be reading ALL the things but I'm not sure yet which things would be best to read. I don't want to leave everything til later in the term but I also don't want to race too far ahead of the lectures or anything. And I have NO IDEA what to write my dissertation on. Well, OK, I do have some ideas, but they are NEBULOUS and RUBBISH.

pluses, largely flaily and incoherent )

Also recently I watched St Trinian's (the 2007 one), which was great fun, full of anarchic glee, and had an excellent cast of marvellousness. (I do feel the need to point out that Cheltenham Ladies' College has green uniforms, not blue, but this is because I am a Known Pedant.) :D

Spoooooks! It is BACK. (I was going to betray it by watching Downton Abbey live, since I can't watch one channel and record another at the same time, and the iPlayer >>>>> the ITV Player, but my digibox has stopped working again so streaming Spooks it is.)

The Eleventh Doctor lying on the ground
I have returned from a lovely Isle of Wight based holiday, in which I did many fun things like painting pottery (me: "shall I paint a soap dish or a Dalek?" everyone else: "A DALEK."), admiring scenery, looking at owls and monkeys, playing games ("I think the rule is that Izzy is allowed to take any fish she wants to the North Pole, and no-one else is allowed to take any at all."), tasting wine, observing glass and sweets being made, and going on walks. Here are some photos!

(Side effect of going on holiday: I came home, looked at the internet and went "...reply to ALL the things? D:". I am getting there, but do feel free to poke me if there's something I really ought to have replied to by now! ♥)

Also I have caught up with Doctor Who. not squeeful :( )
