Short stories I enjoyed this month:
Beauty, Glory, Thrift - Alison Tam: contained SPACE and WOMEN, so off to a good start, but also an interesting plot and a world I wanted to see more of. Plus quietly optimistic when it could easily have gone a different way.
shinyjenni: Close up of Jaylah from Star Trek Beyond (jaylah)
1. I went to see Cursed Child the other week! I had very few expectations going in, other than that the staging would be fantastic (which it was), but friends, I loved it. I mean, I'm sure there are criticisms to be made of it? But I just enjoyed it so much. (Not least because I went to see it with [personal profile] raven, so we got to talk about our reactions and take photos of each other with our respective house banners. ♥) I laughed, I cried, I never knew what was going to happen, it was excellent. I'm torn between "I WANT TO SEE IT AGAIN" and "I don't want to risk diluting this wonderful experience". I do want to read the script, though, which I haven't yet done.

2a. STAR TREK DISCO NEW TRAILER AHHHHH WHAT IF IT'S GOOD

2b. I saw Star Trek Beyond a year ago yesterday, so have now been at Peak Star Trek Joy for a whole year and it's been amazing.

3. THIRTEEN. I didn't really know who Jodie Whittaker was, so it took a moment to sink in, but then I watched the teaser and suddenly had all these emotions in my eyes. And she looks so Doctorish! A little weird and otherworldly and mischievous. I can't wait. It's a shame that we still have a white actor playing the Doctor (my top picks for Fourteen: Meera Syal, Indira Varma, Josette Simon), but this means so much to me even so, not least because I was so sure it was going to be yet another white dude. Also, I watched a few episodes last season for Bill, who is wonderful, and I'm crossing my fingers that she'll be Thirteen's companion, whilst also resigning myself to the likelihood that we'll get a solo boy companion instead.

4. Character announcements for Young Justice season three! I've always found Young Justice a bit hit and miss (I still haven't seen the last three episodes), but with enough hits to keep me more or less on board. ALSO. don't think this is really a spoiler, but just to be on the safe side ) I'm also holding out a teeny tiny bit of hope that now they're free of the constraints of whatever network they were on before, they might be able to include queer characters, as originally planned.

Short stories I enjoyed this month:
Some Cupids Kill With Arrows (Tansy Rayner Roberts): a delightful little confection of a story, involving speed dating and Greek gods. "Letting men finish their sentences was overrated. That was the life lesson she was taking away from speed dating night."
Light, Like a Candle Flame (Iona Sharma): Funny, moving and quietly beautiful.
shinyjenni: Wonder Woman deflects bullets with her bracelets (wonder woman)
I really wanted to love Wonder Woman, but I was really worried that I'd hate it, because DC and I have not been friends for a long time, so I went to see it on my own last night so I could assess my reaction to it before committing to see it with other people. (The spectre of The Force Awakens was looming here: that would have been an even worse experience if I'd seen it with anyone else.) Turns out I... didn't have much of a reaction either way, for spoilery reasons which I will get into under the cut, along with my other thoughts on the film.

emotions not found )

Overall I'm glad I saw it, but partly because now I know what I think about it, and I can stop worrying about it and go back to thinking about Star Trek pretty much full time. I'm sad I didn't love it, but at least I didn't hate it. (Also, I definitely feel like I've given the DCCU a fair try now, because if they couldn't even sell me Wonder Woman, I think I can safely say there's nothing there for me.)
shinyjenni: Steph eating popcorn and wearing 3D glasses (does it have a bat on it?)
I finished season two of Supergirl! What a mixed bag this season was.

The bad:

no point for guessing what the first of these bullet points is )

The good:

no points for guessing here either, let's be honest )

So overall, I'm cautiously optimistic for season three? I feel like second seasons can often be a bit rocky, and this one also had to accommodate network and casting changes too, so I'm hoping it improves on some of the above next year now that that's all settled down a bit.

As I may have mentioned about two or three hundred times already, I REALLY liked Star Trek Beyond, and the subsequent avalanche of feelings precipitated something of a full scale Star Trek feelings renaissance (A++ would recommend). So this is a vid about that, and about all* the things I love and have loved about Star Trek over the last decade or two. ♥

*well. Not all. They wouldn't all fit. Call it a representative sample?

1. Your main fandom of the year?
EVERYTHING IS STAR TREK AND NOTHING HURTS

2. Your favourite film watched this year?
Star Trek Beyond, hands down. I just... really needed that film. ♥

Honourable mentions to Ghostbusters and Contact, both of which I loved a lot.

3. Your favourite book read this year?
Nothing's jumping out as a particular favourite (though there are still ten days left!) but some stuff I really liked this year included:

- Cuckoo Song (Frances Hardinge)
- Star Wars: Honor Among Thieves (James S. Corey)
- Death By Silver (Melissa Scott and Amy Griswold)
- The Blue Castle (L.M. Montgomery)
- Ancillary Mercy (Ann Leckie)

4. Your favourite TV show of the year?
STAR TREK. I'm into season three of TOS, which is... not great, by and large, but I just love them all and their faces so so much, I don't really care. And season two was generally excellent.

5. Your favourite online fandom community of the year?
My fandom community's mostly been offline this year, or talking online to people I also know offline. Highlights included: going to New York (!) to see Hamilton (!!!), and seeing Star Trek Beyond in the cinema, both with some of my favourite fanpeople.

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
can I say Star Trek for this one too

(I really can't.)

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
I didn't really have one, possibly as a result of The Force Awakens crushing all the remaining hope out of me last year. ...yay? I mean, I did not love Every Heart A Doorway like I thought I would, but it wasn't the crushing disappointment it would have been last year.

8. Your TV boyfriend of the year?
Friends, I really love TOS!Kirk. I mean, not as much as Spock loves him, obviously, but still a fair bit.

9. Your TV girlfriend of the year?
JAYLAH. Yes, I know she wasn't actually on TV, but that's hardly my fault, is it.

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Probably all of Star Trek Beyond? Or, more specifically, "I ripped my shirt again": that was the moment I knew I was going to love it.

11. The most missed of your old fandoms?
Honestly I don't really miss my old fandoms all that much. Maybe Doctor Who - I was packaging up some duplicate EDAs that I've finally got round to selling the other day and feeling nostalgic - but I know that one will be back round again eventually.

12. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
What do you mean there are fandoms that aren't Star Trek.

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
STAR TREK DISCO. I'M GOING TO LOVE THEM ALL SO MUCH.

I don't feel like doing the vidding meme this year, so here's a list of fanworks I have made this year instead:
