"I really loved this book and can't quite explain why." - THIS IS MY LIFE. As I have already yelled at you on Twitter :-D But I think you've hit the nail on the head there - the various twists and turns and surprises of the novel unfold in such a way as to delight the reader, rather than make them feel stupid for missing something. And YES to the kindness. I LOVE Charlie and James's relationship ('Bring panettone'!) - it felt like a really real sibling relationship. Not estranged and awkward, but also not creepily close and codependent, like sibling relationships in fiction sometimes are.

Also I'm just really in love with Charles Carter. <3 I think he was a very formative fictional boyfriend. (I read this first at about 14)
