Star Wars: Shattered Empire
The Burning Stone - Kate Elliott

Didn't finish: Charm - Sarah Pinborough. Retelling of Cinderella with a rather unlikeable main character and added horror elements. Not terrible but not really my thing and not good enough to make me continue regardless.

1.) Happy belated birthday to [livejournal.com profile] munditia for yesterday! Hope you had a lovely day.

2.) I am back from Brussels! There are over a thousand unread items in my Google Reader and I have missed EVERYTHING so please link me to things. Brussels was lovely, I took some rather haphazard photos (it is a feature of my camera that in the daylight it is nigh on impossible to see the screen so one cannot tell what one is taking pictures of), they are all on Facebook here and some are below. The weather was pretty good, except on Monday morning when it was freezing, and the Mother and I looked at many things. Sadly we failed to look at the Atomium, we got halfway there and then the metro was unexpectedly suspended, so we had to come back, which was a bit of a pain. Anyway, pictures:

I am at work and the guide book is at home so do not expect terribly informative captions )

3.) Oh, I started reading Victory of Eagles just now thinking it would be full of JOY but then I remembered what happened at the end of Empire of Ivory. NO JOY TODAY.

- I was reading SFX this morning over breakfast and they had an article on the new Star Trek film. They had little quotes from lots of the blokes about their characters, how they were going to play them etc. From Zoe Saldana (Uhura) they picked a quote on the length of her skirt. FAIL! (Edited to clarify that this is directed at SFX and not Zoe Saldana, who was Anamaria in PotC and is therefore awesome.) This train of thought led me to think about how cool it would have been if they'd swapped the genders of some of the characters (though as I think it's supposed to be in the same universe rather than a straight remake, it might not have worked); this is probably terribly sacreligious but I can't help thinking how great a female Scotty would be.

- On a vaguely related note, Helen Mirren to star in a film version of 'The Tempest' playing a female version of Prospero. YES PLEASE. I can imagine her as Prospera very easily, I think this might be rather good.

- I am reading Throne of Jade by Naomi Novik at the moment. I'm enjoying it rather a lot but since it's "Patrick O'Brien, but with dragons!" this isn't really a suprise. I love how well the dragon-y bits are integrated into the real historical stuff, plus it is incredibly absorbing. I was so involved in it this lunchtime that I didn't realise what time it was until I heard Great George chiming the hour and suddenly realised I should be back at the counter. Oops.

I am going to have a go at listing all the books and films wot I read and see this year, hopefully with not entirely uninteresting comments about them. Of course this is all dependent on a) me not being lazy and b) me working out how to edit posts (I've done it before but can never remember how) (ETA I worked it out! It was indeed very obvious). So here goes:
