shinyjenni: Mickey in front of an out-of-focus Christmas tree (mickey christmas)
1) Have decamped to The Parents' house for Christmas! As a result, I may not be around that much over the next week or so, what with all the lounging around drinking tea and playing games I need to do. If there's anything you think I should see/comment on, give me a shout!

2) Vid rec! Can't Go Back Now (BTVS) by [personal profile] such_heights is a really lovely character study of Willow in seasons 1-4. ♥

3) It's really time I accepted that my resolution not to get embroiled in any ongoing comics has been broken: I've been buying Saga for a while (SO GOOD), and Li'l Gotham (SO ADORABLE), and I've just bought Hawkeye #6, which was ace, so I'll probably start getting that too. And if I'm getting that, I might as well investigate getting Captain Marvel too, right? Also, is anyone reading Amethyst Sword of Sorcery? It looks vaguely like the sort of thing I'd like, and I'm pro comics with female leads and writers, but on the other hand, it does mean giving DC money for a new 52 title, and I haven't seen anything that's made me go "MUST READ THIS NOW" yet. Hmm.
shinyjenni: Rani Chandra in the TARDIS (rani)
Hello, new people from various friending memes! I was going to do an introduction post but I couldn't think of anything to say in it. This is the sort of quality dreamwidthing you can expect around here. We could make this an "ask me questions if there's things you want to know" type of post (for everyone, however long you've known me!)? Oh, and also, as a round up: I'm also shinyjenni on Twitter, Librarything/Goodreads (prefer the former for usability and the latter for social things, if only I could somehow smush them together...), and Ravelry, though I don't use that last as much as I always mean to. And I am [tumblr.com profile] usuallyhats on tumblr; I've been trying to tag things properly over there - if there's anything in particular you'd like me to tag for Tumblr Saviour purposes, do let me know! ♥

Also, I have a fandom stocking! I wasn't going to sign up this year, as I'm not sure I'll have the time or the wherewithal to make things, but it's my favourite thing, so I'll try and make time. (Might nick my parents' microphone while I'm there and make some more podfics...) Let me know where yours are!

I went to see The Hobbit last night! I really enjoyed it, but not actually spoilers, just cutting for anyone who doesn't want to see people's thoughts on it before they see it themselves )
shinyjenni: Ace talking to Mel (ace and mel)
Had an exam yesterday, it was rubbish. Well, it was alright. No, it was rubbish. Either way, it's over now and I can relax a bit, apart from the fact that lectures start again on Wednesday and I have stuff to read for them, and the going to work every day thing, and also my flat's a tip because I've been ignoring things that aren't revision... ANYWAY, I do have a bit more time now to do important things like watch TV. And last night I had time to finish looking at all the fantastic things in my [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking! ♥ ♥ ♥ I didn't manage to make/write as much stuff as I wanted to for other people, sadly: combination of revision and terrible time management, sorry! I did make some podfics, though, which was a lot of fun (apart from the probably-inevitable moment of "is that really what my voice sounds like? ...oh dear."). Here they are:

Not Only The Rivers Dream
Author: [personal profile] glinda
Reader: [personal profile] shinyjenni
Rating: Teen
Fandom: Doctor Who
Characters: Ace/Kaara
Summary: She carries part of that world with her where-ever she travels, the one who made her part of that world, held safe in her dreams.

If Love Is A Red Bus
Author: [personal profile] glinda
Reader: [personal profile] shinyjenni
Rating: Teen
Fandom: Doctor Who
Characters: Iris Wildthyme/Sam, Eight/Fitz
Summary: It's draftier than she's used to and the hot water is, if anything, less reliable than in the Doctor's ship.
Original story | Podfic (2.8MB, 3:06)
shinyjenni: Martha and Liz from Doctor Who, with the TARDIS and a Christmas tree in the background (martha liz christmas)
- Am having a "too much internet, too little time" type problem. I hereby apologise for anything I have failed to reply to in the past or will fail to reply to in the future. D: Please let me know about things I should've replied to but haven't!

- LJ's new comment page, aside from everything else, appears to have messed up my layout a little. *sigh* And syndicated feeds don't seem to be updating either.

- At home for Christmas, thus I have played many games ("I've just remembered why I live on another continent", commented The Sister, halfway through Trivial Pursuits) and eaten a great deal of food. Also, earlier this evening I overheard my mother remarking that she wanted to use the top oven to heat the plates as the bottom oven "uses ALL the gas". I AM SO PROUD.

- The Sister and I went to see the new Sherlock Holmes film! I may get round to posting about it eventually, but basically very general impressions, not spoilers ) In related news, I went to a pub quiz and gained a point for my team by correctly identifying a picture of Jude Law in drag. Hurray!
shinyjenni: Martha and Liz from Doctor Who, with the TARDIS and a Christmas tree in the background (martha liz christmas)
- It is the MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR. By which I mean it is [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking time! My stocking is here; let me know where yours are! ♥

- Haven't been posting very much recently; this is because I have an assignment due in next Wednesday and my response to stress is basically "hide in a corner; bite anyone who tries to talk to me". Which is not ideal, especially as I have to go to work every day, an arena where biting is generally discouraged.

- My local library was closed for TWO WHOLE WEEKS. It was terrible. But now it is open again and they had books for me! As a result I finished 52: Volume 3 last night, which I liked more than the previous volumes because it had a) lots more Batfamily-action and b) Christmas. Also it almost made me cry a couple of times.

- Also on a comics note, I have been watching Justice League (on [livejournal.com profile] everlasting_day's recommendation), which I love a lot. It made me like Batman by the simple expedient of having him be hilariously grumpy and sarcastic basically all the time, and it has Wonder Woman who I already loved (I just watched an episode which was all about her getting a girlfriend. Possibly that is not what it was supposed to be about. Nevermind. IT WAS GREAT), yay. And I adore The Flash, and am growing v. fond of Hawkgirl, especially in her scenes with Green Lantern. And J'onn J'onzz is voiced by Carl Lumbly! DIXON! ♥

- Have I linked to DC girls in sweaters yet? I don't think I have, which is clearly an error on my part. The Batwoman one has just gone up and it is SO PRETTY.

- Apparently if you hit return after typing a tag you can end up accidentally posting an entry before you meant to. This is a thing that I did not know until about ten minutes ago. Whoops!
shinyjenni: The Eleventh Doctor lying on the ground (eleventy)
- Two Christmas cards arrived for me on Saturday! (One of them was from [livejournal.com profile] cosmic_celery - thank you!)

- Also on Saturday, I went to see Richard II at the Tobacco Factory, which was excellent, as the Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory season always is.

- [personal profile] paranoidangel has already posted lots of excellent photos of the exhibition part of the Doctor Who Experience, so I will just post a few of the ones that I took:

under this here cut )

- Book meme, from all over the place:

The book I am reading: I've just started reading Inkheart, though by "just started" I mean I have read one page. I'm also reading Managing Change for Library Support Staff, for an essay that I am absolutely going to start writing any day now. And I have nearly finished Birds of Prey: Of Like Minds, having decided recently to work my way through all the Birds of Prey books that my library has. So far this has proved to be an excellent decision.

The book I am writing: None at present.

The book I love most: YOU CANNOT MAKE ME CHOOSE JUST ONE. But if you did, it would probably be The Once and Future King, which is a slight cheat as it is sort of also four books.

The last book I received as a gift: The last two books I got for Christmas were Coronets and Steel by Sherwood Smith and Enchanted Glass by Diana Wynne Jones. Haven't read either of them yet, though, since they had to go to the bottom of the book pile. That is the rule.

The last book I gave as a gift: I bought The Sister The Rough Guide to Southeast Asia on a Budget for Christmas, don't think I've given anyone any books since then.

The nearest book on my desk table: There are piles of library books on my table; I think the closest is the Every Child Matters report, which is sticking out of the bottom of the "books for uni" pile.
shinyjenni: Wonder Woman deflects bullets with her bracelets (eight brigadier)
[livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking went live last night/this morning, and I got MANY awesome things, which I am linking here so everyone can go and squee at them too:

a fab Eight/Brigadier icon from [livejournal.com profile] lindenharp;

a Middleman fic rec from [livejournal.com profile] tigerkat24 (and let me second that rec; if anyone hasn't read it, you must, it is PERFECT);

an awesome Maria and Rani fic from [livejournal.com profile] cosmic_llin;

not one but TWO Martha meets Buffy fics (my number one most wanted crossover EVER) - this one by [livejournal.com profile] sentientcitizen, which is lovely and shippy and has Martha the Vampire Slayer!, and this one by [livejournal.com profile] carawj which is fantastic and has Martha rescuing Buffy, ♥;

a really lovely Sarah Jane/Jo fic from [livejournal.com profile] paranoidangel42;

a completely adorable Perimem fic, with mix-tape from [personal profile] glinda.

and lots of lovely messages and holiday wishes, including Christmassy Buffy graphics from [livejournal.com profile] arenee1999!

And they are all brilliant and happy-making and I am feeling v. joyful as a consequence. ♥
shinyjenni: Amy, River, Eleven and Rory from Doctor Who; text reads "intellect and romance" (team tardis season 31 style)
Things I did yesterday:

- managed to get through my first assessed group presentation without falling over or anything, I'm calling that a win. Well, winnish, anyway. Public speaking is not exactly my forte.

- took down all the Christmas decorations, sadface. (Though, that reminds me: thank you for the cards, [livejournal.com profile] nentari, [livejournal.com profile] revolutionaren, [livejournal.com profile] oxymoron67 and [livejournal.com profile] ghost2! ♥)

- managed to make things for more [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stockings than I feared, but fewer than I'd hoped. So apologies in advance if you don't get anything from me, and rest assured that it is only because I am incompetent.

Other things I have been meaning to post about:

- I have registered for VidUKon! I've never been to a convention before, but this one looks like fun and is about vids, which I love, and is near me, AND [livejournal.com profile] carawj and [livejournal.com profile] cosmic_llin are going, all of which adds up to :D

- Jess texted me last night to tell me that last night's Thinking Allowed had a section on Doctor Who in it, starting at about 4'20! Haven't had a chance to listen to it myself yet, but thought I would link it for anyone else who might be interested.

- Speaking of Doctor Who, I never posted about the Christmas Special, did I? Short form: I really loved it, apart from some stuff that was mostly external to the episode itself. long form under the cut )
shinyjenni: Martha and Liz from Doctor Who, with the TARDIS and a Christmas tree in the background (martha liz christmas)
There was going to be a whole post here about Christmas, but today's [livejournal.com profile] who_daily is eating my brain, so let me sum up:

- Sorry about being more than usually rubbish at commenting! This is likely to continue as am at my parents' for Christmas, do poke me if there's anything you particularly want me to comment on. Am a bit more around on twitter - I'm shinyjenni there, too, largely because I can't think of anything better.

- Number of games played so far this Christmas: 1. Number of games lost: 1. FROWN.

- Happy Christmas, everyone! Whether you're celebrating or not, I hope you have a lovely weekend. ♥
shinyjenni: Martha and Liz from Doctor Who, with the TARDIS and a Christmas tree in the background (martha liz christmas)
- Four clips from "A Christmas Carol"! Obviously both the clips and my reactions contain spoilers! So here is a handy spoiler-cut. )

- Went to a lovely Christmas party, hosted by [livejournal.com profile] cosmic_llin, [livejournal.com profile] carawj and [livejournal.com profile] silly_cleo, at the weekend! Sparkliness abounded, it was awesome.

- Decorated my flat on Wednesday! Rather rubbish pictures: here and here. And almost all my cards are posted, and last night I wrapped most of my presents. (I am terrible at wrapping presents. D:) I only have to get a few more things for [redacted] and [redacted], and if everyone could think arrive-y thoughts at my present for [redacted], that would be appreciated.

- Here are ten of my favourite vids from this year!
  • [livejournal.com profile] cosmic_llin's Machine (Voyager, Seven of Nine) - perfect song for Seven, and beautifully done: hard to pick a favourite moment, but I really love the "and she lacks my organics" sequence.

  • Also on a Star Trek theme, I loved [personal profile] kuwdora's I Wish I Was James Bond - brilliant Bashir vid.

  • On the Leverage front, I cannot stop watching [livejournal.com profile] mareeana's Happy Working Song! (spoilers up to mid season 3 ish) It works so well, and the section to "you can do a lot when you've got / such a happy little tune to hum" flows particularly marvellously.

  • This was recced all over the place when it came out so most of you have probably seen it, but if you haven't, go immediately and watch [livejournal.com profile] millylicious's Party in the Midlands (Legend of the Seeker), because it is AWESOME.

  • Another VVC vid that I loved: [personal profile] trelkez's Take On Me, a multi-era Doctor Who vid that just fills me with so much love for the show. Favourite moment is probably Nine taking Rose's hand around about "it's no better to be safe than sorry". ♥

  • Continuing the Doctor Who theme, so many awesome season five vids! Two of my favourites were Stuck to You by [livejournal.com profile] humansrsuperior, an Eleven/Amy/Rory vid that just makes me go :DDD, and Lullaby Storm by [personal profile] such_heights, which is just gorgeous.

  • Speaking of [personal profile] such_heights, I also loved her Rose vidlet, Pull Shapes - just adorable!

  • One more Doctor Who vid! [personal profile] some_stars's Ace vid, On Your Wings, is fantastic, really spooky and dreamlike.

  • And vid number ten: Gift by [profile] bisclaveret (Buffy). It's a song that gets vidded a lot, but I really love this version of it: it's just perfect for the slayers.
shinyjenni: Five, Nyssa and Adric in a wood, the TARDIS is next to them at an angle, text reads "experiencing technical difficulties (technical difficulties)
- It is [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking time again! Mine is here; let me know where yours are if you're doing it too. ♥

- Why did I spend so long thinking I don't like Miranda? It is hilarious.

- Have been chopping and changing my livejournal layout for weeks, but I think I have finally found one I like, from [livejournal.com profile] mintyapple. Though having said that I will probably wake up tomorrow and decide that I'm fed up of it. It was surprisingly hard to find one I liked, given that I only had three criteria: 1) prettiness, 2) ability to add my header to it and 3) reasonable sized dark text on white background.

- I watched "Kinda" last night, which was excellent. Kudos to whoever thought of dyeing Tegan's teeth when she was possessed, that was VERY effective. I also watched "Four to Doomsday", which I wanted to like because the title is great, but I didn't quite. I spent a fair bit of time going "THIS IS WHY PEOPLE DON'T LIKE YOU" at Adric, alas. The sets were really good, though. Next up is a lot of stories that I have already seen! Exciting. (Oh, also, I have notes at home for a "Logopolis" and "Castrovalva" reaction post, must get round to typing those up. I expect they are full of wit and insight, unless they're not, which is also a possibility.)

Hello, hello, happy New Year! Have been a bit fail at the internet recently - have been skimming my flist and doing newsletters, but not commenting or replying to comments or anything like that, sorry. New Year's resolution #1: be better at commenting! Also, I made a start on reading some Yuletide fic but have only got as far as fandoms beginning with B, oh dear.

Christmas happened and it was fab. "You've won all the games and my hat doesn't fit," my sister told me glumly on Boxing Day. Although the latter is undoubtedly a tragedy, the first bit, although somewhat exaggerated, is quite a good thing if you are me. We have played a lot of games this Christmas: my family has one of those hard-disk recorder boxes, so rather than desperately watching stuff to free up tape to record more stuff, we have been blithely setting the box to record anything we might even vaguely consider watching and fishing out Careers or The Game of Life or similar instead. I did watch Wallace and Grommit, what was lovely, and The Thirty-Nine Steps, terribly fun, and that was all I really wanted to watch so there we go. Also I found a mighty trove of Big Finish books in the sale at Waterstones, hurrah. I have been reading The Inside Story and it is great, a really good read. I made flailyhands at the revelation that Paul McGann has in fact read some of the EDAs, and RTD's introduction was quite lovely and had an adorable little cartoon with it too.

I was going to do a review of the year meme of some sort, but there were an awful lot of questions and I haven't really done anything all that interesting this year anyway, so never mind. I did read 113 books last year, that was quite good. Here is a list of them:

from Tulku to Redemption Ark )

Quite a good mix apart from the fact that 55 of them were in some way Doctor Who books, oops.

Now I am getting hungry so I shall go and eat some things.

Happy Christmas, everyone! I hope you all had/are having a lovely day, whether you're celebrating or not. :) I have had a fab day with my family, full of shiny presents and yummy foods and games and whatnot.

Yesterday was unexpectedly exciting; the power went off at 7.40am and didn't come on until the evening, ooo er and things. Luckily our next door neighbours had a) power and b) an outside plug so my dad chucked an extension cable over the wall (er, we did ask first...) and we managed to plug in the fridge/freezer, the boiler (hot water and central heating!) and some lamps, so it wasn't too hairy. We scrounged up all the candles we could find ("these are the last of the candles from the Miner's Strike," commented my mum in a voice of great portent) and played Monopoly all afternoon, and occasionally said things like "I'm just going to check my email... no I'm not". We got about twenty minutes of Christmas music out of my sister's laptop before the battery on that died. And then at 7.15, lo, there was a great whirring noise as of the power being restored to the video player. And there was much rejoicing amongst the populace.

- Thank you for the cards, [livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1, [livejournal.com profile] revolutionaren and [livejournal.com profile] vandonovan (such a cute card! ♥)! [livejournal.com profile] revolutionaren, your handwriting is very like my sister's, so much so that it caused me a moment of panic along the lines of "ohnoes, The Sister has sent me an actual card through the actual post to my actual flat and I have not done likewise! She is the Queen of Organisation and I am just a fule." But then I opened it and it was all ok again.

- I'm going straight from work to the station to catch a train back to Cheltenham tonight. Fingers crossed the queue for tickets will not be as long as it sometimes is of a Friday; hopefully by this point all the students will have gone home and the only people travelling will be proper grown-ups with cars and stuff. As usual I have got far too much stuff with me, including two cameras, as I turned my flat upside down last night looking for my film one, eventually gave up and packed the digital one, only for the film one to turn up this morning. In my sock drawer. Where I'd already looked. *headdesk*

- Whittards close to calling in administrators. Nooooo, not Whittards! They have the best sales, most of my mugs are from there. D: On the other hand I never go near the coffee section as I can't stand coffee, so.
