Internets! I am thinking about buying myself a smartphone, since my current phone is getting somewhat elderly. Do any of you have any advice for me at this momentous time in my life? I am having some difficulties as I have never actually chosen myself a phone before in my life: my parents got me my first one, lo these many years ago, and the two I've had since have been my sister's cast offs. I am v. torn between going for something super-basic or just biting the bullet and getting an iphone - on the one hand, iphone = extra monies, but on the other, the airtime cost seems to be the same... Thoughts?

The major hurdle is the cost - I currently have a pay-as-you-go phone which I put money on every couple of years at most, so whatever I pick is obv going to be a major jump price wise, thus any advice on minimising this v. gratefully received! Specifically if anyone knows a way that I can get a plan that brings the cost down by giving me hardly any minutes, and not THAT many texts*, but still gives me a reasonable amount of data (...what even is a reasonable amount of data?), that would be awesome.

*I remember the days when you just bought a bolt on that gave you a maximum of five hundred free texts a year, limited to five per day, and this seemed like joyous bounty except on days when you were trying to organise group events and had to find other people to split the texting with. *nostalgic sigh*

I am doing a vidshow for [community profile] vidukon_cardiff / [livejournal.com profile] vidukon! :D And am therefore looking for suggestions of vids to include. The theme is "space", so I'm looking for vids that are about or heavily feature space, spaceships, alien planets etc. All suggestions gratefully received, even the ones you think I probably already know about, because it's very likely that I don't! Plus, if you suggest things I already have on my list, I will feel validated, and that is always nice. ;D (Also, since I've never run a vidshow before, any general advice about that would be ace.) Thanks! ♥

- In dissertation news: sent the first draft of my findings chapter to my supervisor. GULP. I'm slightly behind where my plan says I should be, but said plan was deliberately a bit overambitious so I wouldn't panic when I fell behind, so I'm only panicking a little bit. Just a tiny little bit.

- My laptop is slowly dying. (Back up ALL the things!) Does anyone have any advice for speeding up an old laptop? I already have CCleaner and my defragmenter runs regularly. (Could I reformat the hard drive? Would that help?) Failing that, does anyone have any advice for choosing a new laptop? I want it for internets, word processing, image editing, watching TV and vidding, but I have no idea how powerful is the right amount of powerful for all that. I'm planning to get another Dell, as I've had my current one since May 2008 without any major problems, and that's as good a way as any to narrow down my choice. Also, student discount.

- From the department of potentially awesome things, here is the kickstarter for Nine Worlds Geekfest, pan fandom London con like all those massive ones they have in the US, hoping to run this August. I haven't backed it yet, but I'm definitely thinking about it.

Can anyone recommend me a good PC-based twitter client that'll let me mark tweets as seen and clear seen tweets? I've been using Tweetdeck, but apparently that was bought by Twitter last year (!) and replaced with a version that doesn't have those features. :(

Off sick = listen to ALL the audios! Though actually some of these I listened to ages ago.

Voyage to Venus was lots of fun, but I did have one issue with it: spoilers )

Not much to say about Love and War except that I really liked it.

UNIT: Dominion I have more mixed feelings on. I warmed to Raine really fast (and am considering getting her Lost Stories to hear more about her), and spent a lot of part one going "but what about Raine and Seven? Let's get back to them!". I liked Klein a lot, too, and want to see where she goes next. The Skyheads were a brilliant idea and I would happily listen to a whole audio just about them. mild spoilers ) On the minus side, I found the Other Doctor intensely irritating, and major spoilers ) Also, UNIT needed more women, seriously. As far as I could tell, it was pretty much a boy's club + Klein, sigh. I liked Pete Wilson, but would have LOVED Petra Wilson, for example. If nothing else, all the "oh noes my very pregnant wife" bits would have been less clichéd that way. Oh, and I am sad that it doesn't tie into the previous, excellent, UNIT series. :(

I wrote most of this earlier but held off on posting in case Dark Eyes ended badly, but I needn't have worried: it was fantastic and I loved it (almost - see later) unreservedly. It's about hope, and how sometimes it's difficult and takes courage, but it's important. I ADORED Molly: she's angry and scared and defensive and independent and resourceful, and joyful and no-nonsense, and she's sympathetic to the Doctor's pain but isn't going to let it justify any nonsense from him, and she can't keep her hands off the TARDIS console and AUGH I LOVE HERRRRRR. "Relentlessly unimpressed with the Doctor's shenanigans" is a quality I enjoy in a companion. My one issue is that spoilers ) (Also, for fellow fans of Paul McGann's voice, he both sings and speaks French. Yep.)

I also listened to the special Benny release, Many Happy Returns, which had the perfect Benny mixture of hilarity, adventure and feelings. ♥ Must catch up on Benny. I let my main range subscription lapse recently due to disorganisation, and having heard what happens in the next one I'm missing (Gods and Monsters) I'm not eager to pick it up, so maybe I will take a break for some Benny instead. And possibly some Companion Chronicles: I'm years behind on them. (Any recs?)

1. I am thinking about getting an ipod touch! But since I am incapable of making decisions on my own, I thought I would mention it here and see if anyone has any thoughts on why I should or shouldn't. The battery in my MP3 player is dying so I need a new one (...for a given value of "need", obvs) and I like the way the ipod touch seems to be like a iphone but without the phone part, and therefore without the monthly contract thing, which would be a waste of money given how much I generally spend on my phone. (I was trying to remember the last time I topped my current phone up and managed to narrow it down to "sometime after March 2008 but before Summer 2010". A while, basically.)

2. Continuing with reading the DS9 relaunch books, here are some thoughts on "Ferenginar", as it turns out I have a reasonable amount of them: spoilers )

3. I've been watching Justice League (Unlimited) and am pretty much in the "all the squee!" stage. :D It's so funny and lovely and happy making, and it makes me grin all the time. (Superman: Some of us need to work on our teamwork skills. *pointed look at Batman*) "Hereafter" was particularly great and caused me to have unexpected feelings, and the Christmas episode was just ADORABLE IN EVERY WAY. I haven't seen "Starcrossed" yet (Lovefilm is predicting a "short wait"), but have gone on with Unlimited regardless. I do like the shorter format - it's snappier, and sillier, though the latter may be unrelated - and the way it has ALL the characters. YAY! Happy happy happy.

I use Google Reader a lot. A LOT. And I really liked it, until I loaded it this morning and saw the new interface, which squishes all the actual content down into one corner and spaces out the headlines so that they’re a right pain to scroll through. Argh. So now I am in the market for recommendations: I just want a browser based feed reader that has a fairly sparse interface and allows me to sort feeds into folders and display them with the oldest items first, but I am beginning to feel like I am asking for the moon on a stick. I’ve been looking at various alternatives all morning, but they all do things I don’t like, e.g. insisting on showing me what’s popular (I get enough of that from facebook) or only display new items since my last visit (!). All suggestions gratefully received; I am tearing my hair out here, and feel like I am probably going to end up sticking with Google Reader as the least worst option. D:

(In other things-that-are-annoying-me news, it would be a bad idea to trim a few inches off my own hair with scissors, right? Right.)
shinyjenni: Bernice Summerfield, cartoon version (benny)
- Just realised that I will be on a train next week when the final episode of Spooks is being broadcast. DISASTER. So most of next Monday will be spent dodging spoilers. Am slightly terrified of what might happen: "rocks fall, everybody dies" is a distinct possibility, I feel. Anyway, I will probably cry as I have been watching this ridiculous program for over a third of my life now. Re. last night's episode: spoilers )

- People of the internet! Can anyone recommend me any superhero films with female leads? I was reading SFX's top 50 superhero films poll results the other day and it contained only one female led film (Supergirl, at number 37), which made me sad. But then I tried to think of things that should've been in there and couldn't, which made me even sadder. (NB I haven't seen Electra or Catwoman, so can't judge if their exclusion was a) unjust or b) reasonable.) Surely there are some out there?

- There ought to be a third thing, but I can't think of one.

- Vid rec: Alive by [personal profile] fly_to_dawn: awesome celebration of Primeval's Emily Merchant: time traveller, dinosaur fighter, all round amazing person. :D

- Speaking of vids, I am sort of after your help with my fictional female scientists one again, o lovely flist! As I mentioned last time, I was thinking about including Buffy disguising herself as a scientist, mostly because I love Buffy tremendously. And then I thought, well, Rose disguises herself as a scientist too: maybe if I can think of one or two more, it could be A Thing and not just Me Cheating. :D? The problem of course is that I can't think of any more. (I could've sworn that Sydney Bristow sneaked into somewhere dressed as a scientist, but I found this gallery of her aliases and it doesn't look like it.) Does anyone have any suggestions?

- Lately I have been reading a lot of comics! The medium still hasn't quite clicked for me, but I have been enjoying them all the same. Here is some incoherent squeeing some of the things I have been reading:

Now I need to make some Wonder Woman icons before I take "The Circle" back to the library. And also decide whether I'm going to ILL the next Batgirl, Secret Six and Wonder Woman books, since my library doesn't have them, or buy them and then resell them on Amazon. Decisions, decisions.

Have signed up for [community profile] ladiesbigbang! I'm planning to do a sort of multi-category, multi-fandom thing, including a vid, about fictional female scientists. I'm starting to think about source footage and was wondering if any of you lovely people had any ideas for characters I really should include? So far I have two lists, one of characters who I'm sure I will definitely be able to find footage for, and one of characters who are distinct possibilities, and I would love to hear thoughts on either list and on people I've missed off. ♥ (I have decided, somewhat arbitrarily, that I'm not counting doctors unless they're doing specifically research medicine, sort of thing. This is mostly so I don't have to clip ALL of E.R.)

Lists! )

Short version: *BOUNCEBOUNCEBOUNCEBOUNCEBOUNCE*

(I can neither confirm nor deny that I did a little dance of glee earlier on. Ahem.)

Long version, bearing in mind that I am still basically just going SQUEEEEEEEE and a lot of this is just capslock flailing: spoilers! )

Ooo, and while I am here, can anyone think of any scenes of companions getting to fly the TARDIS? I want to put them in the vid I am making, but I'm sure I must be missing some. So far I've come up with: everyone flying together in "Journey's End", River operating the TARDIS ;in "Time of Angels", "The Big Bang", and "The Impossible Astronaut"; Donna putting a dent in the eighties; Tegan piloting the TARDIS to Castrovalva; Nyssa bashing the console in "The Visitation"; and Romana landing by the book in "The Pirate Planet"... what else is there? Surely there are more Romana scenes?

- Meeeeme: Ask me my Top Five Whatevers. Fannish or literary or otherwise. Any top fives. Doesn't matter what, really! Fandoms, books I might get around to writing one day, women in my fandoms, ideal holiday destinations, goals for the future, celebrity crushes, books I wish would be made into movies, love songs. And I will answer them all in a new post (or in comments).

- This is the bit where I witter on about Radio 4 comedy. Cabin Pressure is excellent this series! I thought the last series was pretty average but everyone seems to have upped their game a bit and now it is great. (Sherlock fans: Cumberbatch is in it, though so is someone else with a very similar voice so nine times out of ten I can't tell if it's him or not.) Just a Minute has been great this series too; this week's taught me that I like Ross Noble a whole lot, and last week's had Sue Perkins, who makes everything better. Not so keen on Chain Reaction, but it's possible I'm judging it rather harshly because it is in the Friday slot and I am always disappointed to find something other than The Now Show or The News Quiz in there.

- My laptop is running out of hard drive, woe. Does anyone have any clever hints for freeing up space (short of "delete everything!")? Or any recommendations for external hard drive type things?
shinyjenni: Sylvester McCoy, Sophie Aldred and Philip Olivier; text reads: "big finish" (big finish are love)
1.) Have been watching the videos on the Big Finish facebook group and they are making me v. happy. I particularly liked the tour of Big Finish Towers (yes, it does include the Room With Duvets Stapled to the Walls, as mentioned on the podcasts), which are (is?) smaller than I expected. OH BIG FINISH, ♥! On the subject of Big Finish, I hear that there is going to be a free audio with the next DWM, featuring Five and Turlough. EXCELLENT.

2.) I have just booked train tickets to go to Brussels in April with my mother; does anyone have any recs of things to do, things to see, places to eat (I am assuming that at some point there will be waffles) etc?

3.) Meme nicked from [livejournal.com profile] agapi42, [livejournal.com profile] nentari and [livejournal.com profile] hhertzof

I wish LibraryThing included DVDs too! That would please my nerdy heart.

First, a request for help: can anyone recommend me some good icon/banner/wallpaper tutorials? Ideally ones that involve textures and/or masks, as these things are a bit of a closed book to me. I feel like I'm stuck in a bit of a rut, icon making wise - crop, screen, soft light, play with curves and maybe fill layers if I'm feeling adventurous, slap on some text if I can think of any - and although I'm quite happy with what I'm making, I'd also like to try some new things. In the spirit of reciprocity, my resource post has a list of tutorials I like.

Last night I watched the first few episodes of The 4400 S3. Am I right in thinking it's cancelled now? A shame if so, but I can kind of see why - the previouslies confused me and I've seen all the episodes (admittedly about a year or two ago now), so I can't imagine what anyone tuning in for the first time would think. But that's also what I like about it - there are all these ongoing plotlines, things develop and change and move on a bit every episode.

Since I've already asked for advice once this entry, I might as well do it again - anyone got any cake/biscuit recipes they feel like sharing? I am hosting Stitch 'n' Witch on Tuesday and feeling a little uninspired in the baking department. ([livejournal.com profile] the_smut_fairy, [livejournal.com profile] tigerpixie, any requests?)
